Gian Van Veen and Ross Smith have become the latest names to book themselves a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest, defeating Danny Noppert and an injured Ricardo Pietreczko respectively.
In an all-Dutch clash in Hungary, former UK Open champion Danny Noppert took on one of the big hopes for the future of Dutch darts in Gian van Veen. In a top quality contest, it was Van Veen that prevailed, taking a 6-3 triumph over his compatriot, despite averaging less (101.31 to Noppert's 102.68) and hitting less 180s (3 to Noppert's 5).
In the end, the biggest difference between the Dutch pair was on the outer ring. Firing at the doubles, Noppert managed just 3 out of 12 (25%), whereas the much more clinical Van Veen checked out at 50% (6 out of 12). In the quarter-finals, Van Veen is now set to take on another Dutchman, in the form of Wessel Nijman.
A quarter-final place also goes to Ross Smith. His match against Ricardo Pietreczko lasted just one leg. After Smith won the first leg, Pietreczko had to withdraw with a wrist injury.
