It has not been
Gerwyn Price's year for now. The 39-year-old Welshman has yet to win a single PDC ranking title this year. Fellow dart player
Vincent van der Voort advises him to take a break to recuperate.
Price, a multiple major winner, went out early at most TV tournaments this year. He doesn't seem particularly happy walking around, either. "He's off his head," Vincent van der Voort said in the podcast 'Darts Draait Door'.
"He is only experiencing negativity now. Then indeed it's better to say you're not playing anything for a while. Just put everything in order. I think it is important for darts that the good and motivated Gerwyn Price comes back. That is really an added value for the sport. That fanaticism and that screaming. That intimidation. You need that kind of player. If we have to talk about Ritchie Edhouse every week, we'll stop this podcast," said a smiling Van der Voort.
Right reasons
Van der Voort hopes Price does take a temporary break for the right reasons. "If he does it to come to himself and recharge the battery, then it's a good idea. But if he skips things because he feels too good for it, then it's a bad idea. I hope he realizes that he can still show very nice things. If he keeps dutifully throwing like he is now, it won't get better. Then he will stay in a negative spiral and he has to get out of that."
Price had previously announced he would only play the Players Championship Finals and the World Darts Championship this year, but surprisingly showed up yesterday at the qualifying tournament for the Grand Slam of Darts. In it, Price eventually reached the deciding match, which he lost to Mickey Mansell. As a result, we will not see the three-time former Grand Slam of Darts winner back in Wolverhampton this year.
