Surviving scares throughout the weekend, he produced when it mattered most against Aspinall with some incredible doubling and at times near flawless finishing in a weekend which reminded him of his previous Gibraltar Darts Trophy triumph.
"This one just reminded me so much of Gibraltar when I was playing really, really bad and the one I won was like 6-5, 6-5, 6-5 and then I beat Mensur in the final. It's how I felt, I'm not playing well but I still managed to win," said Smith post final.
"I had to find a game from somewhere and luckily enough that first leg changed the whole match. He missed six darts and I stepped in for the double two. I was throwing darts away on the 140 and 180, I was just walking on it but it happens sometimes."
"You've got to ride your luck. I had four match darts against me this weekend and luckily enough, I've got my sixth one now. "
He also had a funny analogy to compare Aspinall to in his post match interview with his battling qualities always on display.
"The lad's a dog, he just bites at your ankles all the time. If he's 6-0, 7-0 up in a race to eight, he's there biting at your heels."
