Luke Littler may be preparing for his tie against the winner of Ryan Meikle or Fallon Sherrock who play tonight. But it is also a big night for the 17-year-old darting sensation as he will be among the favourites to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Here is how to vote.
An award which aside from a few nominations for Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen receiving nominations for the global award has shirked the sport in the past. But no-one can look past the rise of 'The Nuke' who has taking the world by storm in the past 12 months.
Footballer Jude Bellingham, runner Keely Hodgkinson, cricketer Joe Root, Para-cyclist Sarah Storey and triathlete Alex Yee are the other nominees for the award with
voting now open. It will close during the awards show.
Those wanting to vote will need to be in the UK and register for a BBC ID in order to place their vote for Littler or any of the other nominees. Littler is widely considered as one of the favourites alongside main favourite Keely Hodgkinson who stormed to gold in the 800m at the Olympic Games earlier this summer.
But can Littler add another string to his bow before he even takes to the Alexandra Palace stage before the Christmas break? Winning a multitude of titles including the Premier League and Grand Slam of Darts, Littler will aim for the biggest prize in his career in the coming weeks.
He is at the ceremony having been pictured on the red carpet this evening in Manchester. Albeit spurning the advice of Taylor who did finish runner-up back in 2010 who told him not to attend.
“If I was Luke’s manager I’d tell him, ‘Sorry, you’re not going.’ Do you want to hang out with a few celebrities on a red carpet, or do you want to win £500,000? And the prize money is only part of it - if Luke wins the world title at 17 years old, the spin-offs and commercial deals will be astronomical, proper life-changing money," he said as per Mirror.
"I was lucky enough to be voted Sports Personality runner-up in 2010, and I did attend the event, but I was 50 years old and I’d won 15 world titles by then. If I was Luke, I’d record a video message."
