Jeffrey de Graaf has opened up his
PDC World Darts Championship campaign with a 3-1 win. But it was
Rashad Sweeting who was the cult hero of the piece as the Bahamian who was making history produced a fine display.
Social media was a buzz at Sweeting also known as 'Candy Man' who walked the wrong way onto stage but when he got on it, he proved himself to be a solid operator against the former Dutch Swede who now faces Gary Anderson in the second round.
It was a shocker on the doubles from De Graaf to start the tie as Sweeting started to bide his time. He was hitting solid tons most visits and with De Graaf missing 7 darts in the opening set, Sweeting claimed the opener 3-1.
It was nearly the perfect tonic for Sweeting as he had set darts to make it 2-0. But it was his turn after being rock solid up to press to miss the outer ring. He missed two darts in the second and De Graaf pounced with a 107 checkout to draw level.
He then took the lead. He blasted through the third set without reply as Sweeting looked to be falling away. But alas Sweeting had one final treat for the crowd.
He pinned an exquisite 126 checkout on the bull for a 2-1 deficit albeit De Graaf finally got over the line to survive a scare and end his opponent's hopes who goes out but leaves Ally Pally as a cult hero.
Next up is Ricardo Pietreczko who pushed Luke Humphries last year the most but has not kicked on since. He faces Xiaochen Zong who always comes with such promise but has yet to deliver it on the Ally Pally stage albeit has faced troubles aside from last year in getting into the UK so he will look for another go tonight at a first win.
