Damon Heta managed to qualify for the World Grand Prix for the third consecutive year. The Australian has not yet had much fun at this double-in double-out tournament, as he has never won a match there. Still, Heta does find it a fun tournament on the darts calendar.
''I like it in itself. The last times I was only defeated in the same way. Played well myself, but I couldn't get it over the line,'' Heta reflected in conversation with VTM 2.
Due to the defeat in the first round two years ago, Heta does not have to defend any prize money in the world rankings this year. He can therefore look to move up the rankings, especially if 'The Heat' manages to get far.
''At the beginning of the season, making the top-10 was my goal,'' said the current number thirteen on the PDC Order of Merit. ''Right now I'm on track, we have some big tournaments ahead of us. I'm looking forward to it. If it works out that's great and otherwise I'll go back to training more to succeed.''
For Heta, participating in the World Grand Prix is a home game of sorts. In 2020, he moved from Australia to England, where he has since lived in Leicester. In that city, the World Grand Prix is being played this week. A duel against Ryan Searle awaits on Tuesday night.
''By now it doesn't matter who you draw. It's always going to be tough,'' Heta said of his draw. ''It's all about who shows up and who knows how to hit the doubles. Hopefully that one will be me.''
