Many criticised the selection of Chris Dobey after he claimed the Masters title last weekend but 'Hollywood' has sealed an ending akin to his moniker on Night One of his Premier League Darts debut in Belfast.
Dobey has sealed a nightly title at the first opportunity defeating Michael van Gerwen in style with a 160 checkout in a deciding leg to top the table albeit at this early stage.
It was superb from the start for the Bedlington thrower as he threw a 170 checkout to level up at 1-1. He found double eight to make it three legs on the spin and opened up a gap at 3-1.
Van Gerwen got back on level terms with a 114 checkout to make it 3-3 but Dobey regained the upper hand and went one leg away at 5-4 but despite that, MVG produced a 92 checkout to send the nerves jangling especially for Dobey who up to this point hasn't had the best record against the Green Machine.
But he shattered that perception with that 160 checkout and ends Night One with all the headlines.
Can only speculate..but vdb is a huge crowd favorite with his dancing and general attitude. Clayton is very likeable as well. Noppert maybe is too pale in comparison. Ross Smith won a major but is not seen as a top player yet in my opinion. Aspinall played really well in the last few months but I would have picked humphries over him nonetheless. But it doesnt matter now. It's the PDCs choice and yesterday was pretty entertaining so I personally don't complain
I can see why Dobey would be in but why VDB and Clayton over Ross Smith and Noppert?
van den bergh i can't justify, but clayton absolutely should be the first name on the sheet. only reason he isn't top 4 in the world is the majors he won happened to be mostly unranked, and despite everyone saying he had a bad year he made 5 TV major semi finals in 2022, way more than any other candidates. not to mention he also comfortably won the PL league phase which is probably the hardest thing to do in darts outside of winning the world championship.
