From Monday, October 6 to Sunday, October 12, Leicester will be all about the World Grand Prix 2025. With a total prize money of a whopping £600,000, this event is among the most lucrative ranking tournaments of the PDC season. Only the World Darts Championship, the World Matchplay and the Grand Slam of Darts pay out even more prize money.
The World Grand Prix has been a fixture on the calendar since 1998 and has a character all of its own. It is the only tournament in which players not only have to finish with a double, but also have to start with a double. Year after year, this format produces surprises, with even the biggest names sometimes falling in the opening round.
Since the first edition, the prize pool has grown spectacularly. Whereas in 1998 there was £38,000 to be divided, with £9,000 for the champion, in 1999 that amount was already almost doubled.
In 2004, the first round sum of £100,000 was at stake. Then it went fast: £200,000 in 2007, £250,000 in 2008 and a year later even £350,000, with the winner collecting a check for £100,000.
In 2014, the PDC decided to distribute prize money more fairly by also better rewarding the early rounds. The total pot grew to £400,000, while the amount for the winner remained unchanged. The next increases quickly followed: £450,000 in 2019 and from 2022 the current £600,000. Of that, 120,000 goes to the champion.
Each contestant can count on £7,500 of starting money. Those who make it to the second round double that amount to £15,000. Quarterfinalists get at least £25,000, semifinalists £40,000. The losing finalist leaves with £60,000, while the tournament winner takes home double that.
