A huge shock at the Grand Slam of Darts, as Luke Humphries already knows after two of the three group matches that he is not going to make it through the group stage. After a surprising 5-3 defeat against Rowby-John Rodriguez, 'Cool Hand Luke' was also unable to win against James Wade.
Humphries led 2-0 and 3-2 against Wade, but also surrendered the break twice. After Wade came back to 3-3, 'The Machine' took over the lead for the first time after a fine 76 finish in the seventh leg. Wade then broke Humphries with an 18-darter to set the final score at 5-3.
Although the reigning world champion regrets his impending elimination, he is also happy to return home. ''What can I say.. gutted to be out of the Grand Slam.. just wasn’t me up on that stage this week, but I’ve had other things on my mind and it makes it so much harder to perform at this level, looking forward to getting back to my son who’s not been well the past few days!,'' Humphries wrote.
Finally, the world number one came out with a thank you to his fans. ''Thank you to everyone for the support and the lovely messages this week. Love you all, and I’m looking forward to spending some time at home with my family, I’ll be back and good luck to the remaining players in the competition.''
