If you look at purely the stats,
Gerwyn Price has been one of the top performers in 2024, despite the lack of real reward for his efforts. Last weekend 'Down Under' however, the Welshman secured victory at the Australian Darts Masters and this weekend, he looks to go again in New Zealand.
"I've come here off the back of no confidence at all. So to come from winning in Wollongong, I'm looking forward now to playing in New Zealand and fingers crossed I can get a double," the former world champion says in conversation with
Dan Dawson for the PDC's
official social media pages pre-New Zealand Darts Masters 2024.
Whilst, as mentioned, Price has had little reward for some strong performances this year, on the
World Series of Darts he has tasted success, first at the Nordic Darts Masters and then most recently in Australia. So is the luck turning in favour of the Welsh number one? "I don't know," he answers honestly. "I probably should have lost to Peter Wright when he got in front of me in the last leg, but sometimes you need a little luck. He slipped up and I took out the 106. That hasn't been happening for me all year really, I've been missing doubles, letting people in and they've been doing that to me so, I'm just glad to get over the winning line and then I played pretty well in the final."
"I push myself to enter the Pro Tours and play as many events as I can in the lead up to the big events. Because you need that confidence and to be playing on the board against the best players," Price continues. "Hopefully, coming Down Under is going to push me on, give me a little bit of confidence and help me get my form back!"
As an added bonus for Price in Australia, the Welshman defeated none other than
Luke Littler in the final, comfortably too, by a dominant margin of 8-1. "Yeah, I just wish it was 8-0," Price jokes, bringing out a big laugh from Dawson, before turning his attention back to the upcoming challenge in New Zealand, where Price will face Ben Robb in the opening round. "This is what the World Series is all about. Travelling the world, promoting the game, but also improving the players so they can go to Q-School and get a Tour Card. Wherever we go it's tough, but I'm feeling a bit more confident than I was at the beginning of last week so that puts me in good stead."
