Alex Spellman captured the 11th tournament of the CDC season as he channeled by his own admission some of the negative energy into a positive for the first time.
Spellman admitted that he has not been at his happiest both on the dart board and also at home for sometime and he had to find a way through so almost had a don't care approach to it and didn't care whether he won or lost. This in reality stood him in good stead.
Spellman grabbed the title at CDC Tour 11 by winning over Daniel Inman (5-2), Jack Robinson (5-0), Steve Warnock (6-0), Jacob Taylor (6-4), Adam Sevada (7-5) and Stowe Buntz (7-4) in succession.
With three CDC tournaments remaining, Gates is the top-ranked American player with 101 points. Behind him follow Stowe Buntz (82 points) and Alex Spellman (75). The winner of a CDC tournament receives eighteen points, meaning Buntz and Spellman still have a lot of catching up to do to qualify for the PDC World Darts Championship. Cameron holds the Canadian World Championship spot with 83 points. His biggest competitors are Jim Long (78 points) and Jacob Taylor (69 points).
"I wouldn't say that yet, it's been a long eight months. Hit a little spot during the Cross Border where things came together a little bit, but it's just that my game hasn't been at the top," said Spellman.
"But the last couple of weeks I've been looking at it, it's not my best run still in the top 10 in the CDC. Definitely as far as quality goes I had the seventh highest average and this is me feeling like I'm not me this year. So I used that to tell myself even when I'm struggling I still have a chance."
"Last few months has been putting a ton of time in trying to fix what I've got going on. Had some issues at home, not with my lovely wife she's amazing. But everything with the car, the house. I started letting some of that negative energy get to me for the first time since I really broke out in COVID. I did a video where I made that choice where I'm not going to be that anymore. If I lose, I lose."
"I made the choice to do the Michael Smith and spray and pray. While I hated the way it felt, they went in and that's all that matters."
