Quite a few tournaments have already been played on the PDC circuit over the past few months, but the tournaments will now follow in rapid succession towards the PDC World Darts Championship.
The month of September is traditionally the start of the busy fall season, when a lot of Players Championship tournaments, Euro Tours and televised tournaments will be played. Check out the PDC calendar for the month of September below.
The Euro Tour resumes this coming weekend with a trip to Hildesheim for the 2024 German Darts Championship. Most of the world's top players will be present at the Euro Tour event in Germany including the likes of Gerwyn Price, Michael Smith, Ross Smith, Luke Littler, Gian van Veen and Michael van Gerwen among others.
The German Darts Championship is one of the oldest Euro Tour tournaments on the darts calendar. The tournament's honors list includes a lot of different names. Michael van Gerwen (2015, 2018 and 2022) is the only player to win the German Darts Championship more than once. Dave Chisnall (2013), Gary Anderson (2014), Alan Norris (2016), Peter Wright (2017), Daryl Gurney (2019) Devon Petersen (2020) and Ricardo Pietreczko (2023) are the other tournament winners. Pietreczko sensationally won the title in Hildesheim last year. He defeated Michael van Gerwen 7-6 in the semifinals, before 'Pikachu' dealt with Peter Wright (8-4) in the final.
Again on the European Tour, the players will face off for the right to lift the 2024 Flanders Darts Trophy the weekend after the German Darts Championship, where many of the sport’s biggest names will be in action once more.
As is always the case with the Euro Tour events, the tournament will be broadcast in its entirety by PDC.tv. The first round will take place on Friday, September 6th. The 16 Order of Merit qualifiers and the winners from the various qualifying tournaments then make their appearance. The top-16 seeded players enter the tournament on Saturday in the second round. Sunday will see the conclusion of the tournament, starting with the third round in the afternoon session. Sunday evening will be followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
The ladies will also compete in the month of September. The fifth tournament weekend of the PDC Women's Series will be played out as the race for World Darts Championship and Grand Slam of Darts qualification heats up.
Well-known names such as Beau Greaves, Fallon Sherrock, Lisa Ashton, Mikuru Suzuki and Noa-Lynn van Leuven will compete for the titles in this event. As mentioned, at the end of the season, the best player of the year gets to compete in the Grand Slam of Darts. In addition, the numbers one and two of the final rankings will be invited to the World Darts Championship.
Taking place from September 13 to 15 at the AFAS Live in Amsterdam, it is the culmination of the 2024 World Series of Darts season. The three-day event now has a field of 32 players, which is an expansion of eight players from the past one. The best-performing players from the World Series circuit have been invited to this event, supplemented by several other qualifiers.
Luke Littler leads the seeding list, with the likes of Gerwyn Price, Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Rob Cross, Luke Humphries, Michael Smith, Dimitri van den Bergh, Damon Heta, Nathan Aspinall and Stephen Bunting also among the field.
All players with a PDC Tour Card are expected at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Tuesday 17 September and Wednesday 18 September for the continuation of the Pro Tour season. The 20th and 21st Players Championship tournaments of the season will be played then.
Each Players Championship tournament will feature 128 players. First of all, the 128 PDC Tour Card holders are invited. If not all Tour Card holders participate, players from the Challenge Tour are invited.
A number of matches during these Players Championship tournaments will be played on a livestream. This livestream can be viewed via PDC TV. The winner of a Players Championship tournament collects the top prize of £15,000. Through the Pro Tour tournaments, players can qualify for majors such as the World Grand Prix, Players Championship Finals and the PDC World Darts Championship.
The Hungarian Darts Trophy is on the calendar again this year in September. This event is already in its fourth edition. It takes place from Friday 20 September to Sunday 22 September at the MVM Dome in the Hungarian capital Budapest.
Defending champion at the Hungarian Darts Trophy is Dave Chisnall, who was too strong for Luke Humphries in the final 8-7 last year. Both Englishmen are back in Hungary this year.
Chisnall even leads the ranking list in Budapest. Other world class players such as Ross Smith, Gerwyn Price, Danny Noppert, Rob Cross, Gian van Veen, Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen, Michael Smith, Jonny Clayton, Raymond van Barneveld, Peter Wright, James Wade, Joe Cullen, Dimitri van den Bergh and Nathan Aspinall will be in action at the Hungarian Darts Trophy.
The next Players Championship dual header will take place at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester on Tuesday 24 September and Wednesday 25 September. A week and a half later, the World Grand Prix will also be played at this venue.
These tournaments are also one of the last events to count in the qualification race for the World Grand Prix. After these two floor tournaments, there is only one more Euro Tour event before the field of participants for the World Grand Prix is complete.
The last tournament of the month of September is a special one, as from Friday 27 September to Sunday 29 September, the Swiss Darts Trophy makes its debut on the tournament calendar. It is the very first time the PDC has hosted a tournament in Switzerland.
The St Jakobshalle in Basel has the honour of hosting the very first PDC tournament on Swiss soil. Swiss fans are in luck, as virtually the entire world's top players have signed up for the Swiss Darts Trophy.
The list of participants includes Dave Chisnall, Ross Smith, Luke Humphries, Gerwyn Price, Danny Noppert, Stephen Bunting, Rob Cross, Gian van Veen, Chris Dobey, Michael van Gerwen and Luke Littler. Also among the line-up are Jonny Clayton, Michael Smith, Raymond van Barneveld, Peter Wright, James Wade, Joe Cullen, Dimitri van den Bergh and Nathan Aspinall.
