Wessel Nijman has been one of the standout performers on the ProTour this season, but despite his rapid rise, the Dutchman feels little urge to embrace one of darts’ most famous traditions: a nickname.

While players like Luke Littler, Gerwyn Price, and Luke Humphries are known worldwide as “The Nuke,” “The Iceman,” and “Cool Hand” respectively, Nijman prefers to keep it simple. The 25-year-old is not at all drawn to the idea of a stage nickname.
“I just never liked nicknames and all the things behind them,” Nijman told Darts Corner. “I think it can be a bit silly. It's just nothing for me. I'm quite down to earth and a normal guy, so maybe that's why I don't have a nickname.”
That calm demeanor contrasts sharply with his results in recent months. In 2026, Nijman has become one of the most successful floor players and has already captured five Players Championship titles. That places him among the most consistent players on the ProTour this year.
Even so, Nijman still ranks another achievement at the top of his personal list. His European Tour triumph earlier this season remains special. “My best achievement in darts right now is winning a European Tour event,” said Nijman. “To win a tournament on that kind of stage was probably the best thing that could happen that weekend.”
The Dutchman made a big impression in March by winning the European Darts Trophy. In the final, he beat Gerwyn Price 8-3, proving once and for all that he can compete with the world’s elite on the big stage.

Who would make the best best man at a wedding?

Beyond his performances on the oche, Nijman was also asked a lighter question: which player would be most suitable as the best man at his wedding? The answer came without hesitation.
“Out of all the darts players, I think there can only be one man, and that's probably Niels Zonneveld,” Nijman said with a laugh. “We used to be neighbours. Now we live in different cities, but we still travel together to all the European Tour events.”
The bond between the two Dutchmen clearly remains very close. “I'd say he's my best man on tour now, so probably at my wedding as well.”
