Joe Cullen has won the fifth Players Championship event of the 2025 season. In the final in Leicester on Tuesday, 'The Rockstar' narrowly prevailed over the Dutchman Gian van Veen with an 8-7 win. For Cullen it is his first ranking title win for more than two years.
Cullen fell behind 7-4 in the final and even saw Van Veen miss six match darts, before mounting a strong comeback. "I think this is the best win of my career, because of the adversity I have had to endure over the last year,” reflected an emotional Cullen in his post-match interview after the final with the PDC.
As touched upon there, former Premier League finalist Cullen has not had the best last couple of years. As a result, he is currently ranked 22nd in the PDC Order of Merit. “When you’re slipping down the rankings and you’re doubting yourself, there is nothing worse in darts," he reflects. “I had all-sorts going on away from darts and I wasn’t practising. There was no motivation there and that’s why I slid down the rankings, but ultimately the buck stops with me."
“I think I’m down to number 22 in the world. There’s not 21 players that are better than me in the world, but the rankings don’t lie," concludes the Englishman. “I’m there for a reason, but I am doing everything I can to get myself back up those rankings!”
Cullen and the rest of the PDC Pro Tour field will have another chance at adding a trophy to their cabinets this afternoon in Leicester, where Players Championship 6 concludes this midweeks double header of action.
