Kevin Doets' fairy tale at the PDC World Darts Championship has come to an end. The 26-year-old Dutchman lost 4-3 to Chris Dobey at Alexandra Palace in the last 16.
Doets still got out to a 3-2 lead in sets, but was ultimately stuck with an average of 88.17 and only 30 percent on his doubles. "Sucks? It was just bad. Those last two sets were really dramatic. I totally blew it," Doets told AD.nl.
Maybe the emotions all got a little too much for him? "What all this World Championship has unleashed? Too much. Or, well. Not necessarily too much, but a lot," he says.
Everything empty
Doets has been showered with messages and congratulations over the past few days about his strong World Championship. "So many messages and positivity. That is good for your self-confidence, but I am completely empty now. Sunday I heard that I had to play the first game in the afternoon on Monday. Then I thought: shit, that's annoying. I also went to bed at 9:30 and slept for eight hours, but woke up this morning and was still really tired. I don't know why either."
So "Hawkeye" doesn't have to think too long about what he mainly wants to do in the coming days. "Sleep," he says. "I'm now going to ask my manager to book a flight back to Sweden (where he lives with his girlfriend Jaqueline and baby son Aiden), but not in the morning. I'm really going to get some sleep first and then enjoy my baby."
How does Doets look back on his World Championship now? "Beforehand you sign for this, because it is the first time I reach the last sixteen at a tournament, but I really could have won. Dobey is at his best at the World Championship, but so am I. He didn't throw spectacular, but I just couldn't do it. Proud? That will come tomorrow, not just yet."
