After taking more than a year and a half out, Adrian Lewis is set to return to the darting scene via the MODUS Super Series in 2025. Recently though, Barry Hearn publicly told 'Jackpot', if he ever wants a PDC return, he won't be receiving any special treatment.
There were claims from some that Lewis deserved to be offered wildcards or a legends Tour Card, similar to the one given by Hearn's Matchroom Sports-owned World Snooker Tour to seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry. Speaking SunSport though, Hearn shut down this speculation emphatically. “It’s not about what you used to do – it’s about what you can do," he explained. “Does he have to go through Q School? Yeah. We’d welcome him back with open arms."
After Hearn's comments were circulated on social media, Lewis himself felt the need to reply. The two-time champion of the world quote re-tweeted a story from TalkSport on Hearn's comments, insisting special treatment or handouts is not something he would want even if offered.
"I'd never want any hand outs and I'd never ask for one," writes Lewis on his official X (Twitter) account. "I've taken 21 months off the PDC circuit for my own personal reasons, hence why I aren't playing at this year's World Championships. Hope everyone enjoys the tournament and enjoys the festive period."
As mentioned, Lewis is soon set to end his sabbatical and return to the darting circuit in 2025 on the MODUS Super Series. “I’m delighted to be returning to the sport that I love, and to be backed by MODUS Sports Management going forward,” said Lewis previously about his plans for the coming year. “I feel refreshed and re-energised, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for me. I will not be rushing back to Q-School just yet, but I am not ruling it out in the future. Firstly I shall be looking to play the MODUS Super Series in 2025 as my pathway back to the Professional circuit.”
