Joe Cullen managed to beat one of the home crowd favourites at the 2024 German Darts Championship last weekend. In his second match of the tournament however, Cullen then suffered a very disappointing defeat.
'The Rockstar' began the European Tour tournament in HIldesheim on Saturday with a victory over Max Hopp, who was making his first appearance on the Euro Tour circuit since 2022. Against Hopp, Cullen initially squandered a 3-0 lead, but eventually pulled out a 6-4 win. In the third round on Sunday afternoon, Cullen had to face Dave Chisnall, who was the number one seed at the German Darts Championship. Cullen did not perform at all, throwing an average of only 79.50. The 35-year-old Englishman had four chances on the doubles, but missed them all and thus lost 6-0 to his compatriot.
Via his socials, Cullen made no bones about his poor match against 'Chizzy. ''No excuses there….. think I woke up with someone else’s arm this morning! Probably my worst performance on the Euro Tour ever,'' Cullen wrote on his official X account afterwards.
It was not in the first time Cullen threw an average below eighty this season either. At the tenth Players Championship tournament, the former Masters champion recorded a 73.67 average. That left him with a 6-0 defeat against Berry van Peer.
''These games happen from time to time but it’s tough to take when they do. It’s one of those that’s that bad that if I didn’t laugh I’d cry,'' Cullen concludes his post.
Next weekend Cullen may make his appearance on the Euro Tour again. He will then take part in the Flanders Darts Trophy in Antwerp. He will enter that tournament from the first round. After nine of the thirteen Euro Tour tournaments Cullen is nineteenth on the Euro Tour Order of Merit.
