Luke Humphries has been the most dominant force in the world of darts over the last twelve months, taking five major titles plus the World Cup of Darts with England and building a dominant lead at the top of the PDC Order of Merit.
The most recent of 'Cool Hand Luke's' title wins came in Blackpool at the World Matchplay. "This one's super special. Feels so great to have them two massive tournaments under my belt in the same calendar year," Humphries says in conversation with
Online Darts, referencing his World Darts Championship win from earlier this year. "The World Championships was the dream, but of course, to match it up with the Matchplay as well, it's a phenomenal achievement for myself."
Probably Humphries' biggest fan was also present again in Blackpool to celebrate more success with the world champion. "My dad just can't belive it. He never in his wildest dreams would have expected all these tournament wins to be in such a short space of time," Humphries says with a smile. "There's no other tournament thqt if I was to retire anytime, that I would look back and think 'God I wish I would have won that!'"
Although it never seemed to really effect him, Humphries was the victim of some boos from the crowd during the early portion of this year. Thankfully, these seem to have died down of late with the world number one getting the love and respect he deserves of the crowds in attendance, wherever he goes. "There's a few occurrences that happened. The Dimitri Van den Bergh thing, with him shrugging the shoulders and I'd usually just ignore it, but I thought no. You're going to have it back I'm going to give you a little bit," Humphries explains, noting how he now shows a bit more passion up on stage. "I'm not going to all of a sudden start changing my personality, start being arrogant and saying I'm going to thrash everybody. That's not in my personality, but you know, sometimes it is nice to be a part of it and if people are going to say things about me, then II'll say things back."
Despite being the undisputed top dog in darts currently however, much of the fan hype in the sport still surrounds the man Humphries beat in the World Darts Championship final,
Luke Littler, not that Humphries is complaining about that fact. "I think a lot of the fans sort of respect and understand the things I've achieved and how incredible it is," Humphries assesses. "Luke obviously is fantastic with his social media presence and all the celebrities he meets and stuff like that. If I was 18 years old, maybe I'd feel a little bit jealous but I'm nearly 30 now! Meeting celebrities, that's not the top of my list anymore. Doing things like that doesn't interest me. But for Luke, a 17-year-old, it must be amazing."
