Luke Humphries was one of the top players in action Thursday night during the opening night of the Winmau World Masters in Milton Keynes. It didn't go easy, but the world number one triumphed 3-1 in sets against former Masters winner Joe Cullen.

The dethroned world champion missed three chances to win 3-0 over Cullen, after which "The Rockstar" took the third set and reduced the deficit. In the fourth set, however, Cullen fumbled on the doubles and ruined his chances of a comeback. Then the victory in the fourth set still went to Humphries.

“I’m really happy with the way I bounced back after missing those three match darts,” reflected Humphries.

“The first set was always going to be crucial, particularly in this short format. Joe is a very tough player to beat and he showed a lot of grit and determination there.

With an average of 98.62 and a finishing percentage of 39 percent, it was a solid performance by Humphries. However, 'Cool Hand Luke' himself is not concerned with how he wins matches. “I’m not worried about laying down markers or sending out messages. I’m just here to enjoy myself and win as much as I can.”
