Joe Cullen made his mark not only on stage at the
Baltic Sea Darts Open, but also off it with some striking remarks. After his first-round win, the Englishman sounded off about German drinking water, specifically the popular sparkling variety.
Cullen enjoyed an excellent sporting start to the tournament in Kiel. The 36-year-old from Bradford swept past German player Marcel Hausotter and cruised to a 6-1 victory.
Afterwards, Cullen appeared relaxed for his on-stage interview, where he suddenly raised an eye-catching topic: German sparkling water. “Hopefully tomorrow we can get some decent water," said Cullen on stage.
“How you Germans drink sparkling or whatever water that is – it’s disgusting. It’s a disgrace!
The Englishman could barely fathom why sparkling water is so popular in Germany. “How you Germans drink that water is beyond me!,” Cullen added with a laugh, addressing the crowd in Kiel.
On the oche, Cullen’s convincing opening win set up a tough assignment in the second round. There he met compatriot Dave Chisnall, who ultimately ended his tournament.
Chisnall won their head-to-head 6-4 to reach the next round of the Euro Tour event in Kiel. For Cullen, besides his win over Hausotter, it was his striking criticism of German sparkling water that lingered.
