"I've obviously got to play a lot better than that playing 'Barney'" - Wright admits improvement is needed if he's to keep hopes of World Series Finals victory alive
Peter Wright successfully advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam, courtesy of a 6-4 win over Haupai Puha. Averaging only 83 however, Wright was far from convincing.
"I was looking forward to going up there and playing well but obviously, it didn't happen," a disappointed Wright explains to Online Darts in a post-match interview. "I thought I did alright to dig deep and get through that game. That was all thanks to a few people in the crowd, Scottish fans in the front there getting behind me."
Next up Wright plays a hero of Dutch darts, Raymond van Barneveld. In that one, it's likely the entirety of the crowd will be on the back of 'Snakebite'. "I've obviously got to play a lot better than that playing 'Barney'," Wright admits. "A battle of the old guys. About a hundred years experience on the stage so it should be good. Seven world titles between us," he laughs.
On the potentially hostile atmosphere, Wright actually thinks it could be a benefit. "That'll help me to be honest, plus I know where I am with my darts," he says. "I've tried the really long points. I took them to Australia because the players doing the damage now are Beau Greaves, Luke Littler and what are they using? Really long points so I thought I'd give them a try. But they just went like boomerangs so yeah, that didn't work for me."
