In Leicester, the 24th Players Championship of the year was completed yesterday. The title went to
Gabriel Clemens, who proved too strong for Luke Woodhouse in the final with an 8-6 win. For the 42-year-old German, it was his first title on the PDC Pro Tour after several lost finals.
The highest average at
Players Championship 24 did not go to Clemens, but to
Joe Cullen. “The Rockstar” beat Austrian Mensur Suljovic 6-3 in the second round and posted a 105.98 average. Cullen eventually fell a round later after a 6-5 defeat to his compatriot Rob Cross.
Justin Hood delivered the second-highest average of the day. The English World Championship surprise proved too strong for compatriot Mervyn King 6-3 in the last 32 and produced a 105.90 average in that match, just a touch lower than Cullen. Hood then reached the last 16, where he lost 6-3 to Woodhouse.
The top three is completed by Josh Rock. The Northern Irishman edged Daryl Pilgrim 6-5 in the second round. “Rocky” recorded a 104.76 average in that match. The last 32 proved the end of the road for Rock after a 6-3 defeat to Englishman Scott Williams.
Van Veen, Dobey, Wade also on the list
Just outside the top three we find Jeffrey de Zwaan, the only Dutchman in the top ten of highest averages at Players Championship 24. “The Black Cobra” beat Ross Smith 6-1 in the last 32 and posted a 104.01 average. De Zwaan eventually bowed out in the last 16 after a 6-3 defeat to his compatriot Gian van Veen.
Chris Dobey is next with 103.68, James Wade also sits in top 10 with 102.99. Others on the list include Bradley Brooks with 102.65, Brendan Dolan with 102.55. Gian van Veen is probably the biggest name further down towards the bottom of the list. He hit 100.21.
The Players Championship now takes a break for a few weeks and resumes on Tuesday, 07/28. The 25th tournament of the year is scheduled in Hildesheim.
