Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney wrote their names into Northern Irish sporting folklore on Sunday night in Frankfurt, as they became the nation's first ever World Cup of Darts winners.
For Rock, someone who has long been considered a future PDC major winner, the hope is that this breakthrough success on the World Cup stage can set up 'Rocky' perfectly to kick on in the individual majors.
To date, Rock's best performance in a televised PDC major ranks as a run to the semi-finals at the UK Open in Minehead earlier. A quarter-final run at the Grand Slam of Darts in 2023 also showed the signs of Rock's potential, but whilst the 24-year-old has lifted titles on the European Tour and the Players Championship circuit, a big stage title is still missing.
"I think he got to a couple of quarter-finals, couldn't get over that stage. Then this year at the UK Open, he got over that stage," continues Gurney, himself a two-time individual PDC major winner and former Premier League Darts regular. "Sometimes it's baby steps to make progress and I think Josh is going the right way. Every year he seems to get better."
Whilst there has been some talk of Rock's progress stalling slightly over recent seasons, Gurney is also quick to refute this idea. "Everybody seems to forget that this is only his third year playing on the PDC. He's still really new to TV darts and look how well he played," 'SuperChin' explains. "So for me, we've got a superstar on our hands. The sky is the limit. He can win all the majors, he can win a world championship and he could be playing in the Premier League next year, you never know."
