King sees off Chisnall in impressive win, Searle dumps out Van den Bergh

The opening session of action at the Players Championship Finals has seen some terrific displays and some shocks to end proceedings.

Mervyn King ended the session with a brilliant victory over Dave Chisnall. It was vintage King as he hit a 105 average and 50% on the doubles to defeat the in-form St Helens ace.

That was added to the main stage line-up after the conclusion of Simon Whitlock who continues his impressive year with a 6-4 defeat of Adrian Lewis. He averaged 97.4 with six 180's.

He made his mark at the Grand Slam by usurping the former 180 mark by his opponent and to finish he hit one with an 83 checkout to conclude it. Clinical darts from 'The Wizard'.

While Ryan Searle dumped out the World Matchplay champion Dimitri van den Bergh with a 6-2 victory which saw a 100 average and 50% on the doubles from 'Heavy Metal' who of course has joined the winners circle for the first time on the ProTour this year. Can he make his mark this week?

Callan Rydz has made his mark as of late and the in-form Bedlington ace made sure 2018 champion Daryl Gurney was going home early on Stage Two. It was a 6-2 win and with Gurney going nowhere near defending his title from two years ago, it will be a pivotal defeat going forward.

While Jonny Clayton was on form also defeating Mickey Mansell 6-2 in another Stage Two victory in a great opening session in Coventry.
