Jelle Klaasen is through to a second round Double Dutch clash with Michael van Gerwen after seeing off Kevin Burness in the first match of the 2020 PDC World Championship.
Klaasen came from a set behind but wasn't that troubled in the end against 'Iron Man' hitting a 96 average, a 52 percentage on the doubles which included a brilliant 152 checkout; if he can play even better later, he could trouble 'Mighty Mike' later.
Burness took the first set in what was a last leg decider after he previously missed darts to take the set even earlier. He held his nerve though with an 82 finish to snatch it and send the impetus over to Klaasen.
'Iron Man' continued to build as he hit a 62 finish to lead in the second set but Klaasen took a break of throw back and then held his throw to move 2-1 ahead of the Northern Irishman.
He wrapped up the set 3-1 to make it 1-1 and make it anybody's game going into the third set.
A 152 checkout which was the first ton plus finish of the tournament broke Burness' throw to make it 1-0 in that next set. This proved to be a catalyst and despite Burness hitting a 102 checkout to level it up, Klaasen eased to a 2-1 lead in sets.
Burness hit a second 180 but Klaasen hit double 10 lead 1-0 in the requisite set as he looked to be heading towards a clash with Van Gerwen. He missed double 12 for a 138 checkout but Burness was too far back allowing 'The Cobra' to go within a leg.
He couldn't finish it off straight away as Burness hit double 20 to break back. But his comeback didn't last long as Klaasen hit a 100 checkout to move through.
