Hungarian Darts Trophy 2026 Roundup - Luke Humphries stunned as Michael van Gerwen survives and Josh Rock whitewashes Joe Cullen in Budapest

Luke Humphries crashed out of the 2026 Hungarian Darts Trophy on Saturday evening as Dirk van Duijvenbode claimed a 6-3 upset in Budapest, while Michael van Gerwen survived a scare against James Hurrell and Josh Rock completed a brutal 6-0 whitewash of Joe Cullen. Stephen Bunting, Jonny Clayton, Keane Barry, Gian van Veen and Nathan Aspinall also booked their places in Sunday's last 16 as the second round came to a close.

Van Duijvenbode produced the biggest result of the session, beating Humphries for the first time on a major stage with a 98.34 average.

The opening six legs all went with throw before the Dutchman struck decisively, following a perfectly timed 180 with an 81 checkout via treble 19 and double 12 to complete an 11-darter and break for 4-3.

He then produced arguably the finish of the night, taking out 140 through treble 20, double 20 and double 20 to move within one of victory. A two-dart 68 checkout completed the 6-3 win and brought Humphries' return to the European Tour to an immediate end.

Van Gerwen also found himself in trouble against Hurrell, who broke throw before firing in two 180s during a 12-darter to establish a 3-1 advantage.

Hurrell then missed the bull for the chance to move 4-1 clear, allowing Van Gerwen to stop the run. A far more costly error followed in the sixth leg when, with 15 remaining, Hurrell hit the big 17 with his first dart and bust his score. Van Gerwen punished him on double five and roared his celebration after drawing level.

The three-time world champion took three consecutive legs to move 4-3 ahead and, after Hurrell briefly restored parity, a 76 finish pushed Van Gerwen within one of victory. He opened the tenth leg against the darts with a 180, added another maximum shortly afterwards and eventually sealed a hard-fought 6-4 win on double eight.

His last-16 opponent will be Nathan Aspinall after 'The Asp' came through another competitive encounter with Ryan Joyce 6-4. Joyce averaged slightly higher at 95.28 and led 3-2 after taking the first break of throw, but Aspinall immediately responded with a 76 checkout and surged into a 5-3 advantage.

Joyce broke back to stay alive before Aspinall missed the bull for a match-winning 170 in leg ten. There was no punishment, however, and Aspinall returned to close out the victory and secure a Sunday meeting with Van Gerwen.

There was considerably less drama in the final match of the night. Rock swept Cullen aside 6-0 despite averaging only 85.89, with the former Hungarian Darts Trophy champion producing just 76.91 in a night to forget.

Rock missed seven darts at double before finally securing the opening leg, but Cullen never found a way into the contest. A 116 checkout doubled the Northern Irishman's advantage before he continued to pull clear, eventually taking out 130 on the bull to make it 5-0. The whitewash was completed one leg later.

Van Veen had been similarly ruthless earlier in the evening, requiring only around ten minutes to dismiss Hungarian qualifier Nandor Major 6-0. The Dutchman opened with a 180, added a 13-dart break and was perfect on his first three attempts at double.

The highlight arrived at 4-0 when Van Veen produced a 167 checkout on the bull. Major finally earned his first dart at double in the sixth leg but missed double four, allowing Van Veen to finish the job on double 16 with a 98.02 average.

Bunting opened the evening with one of the more convincing displays, averaging 97.86 in a 6-1 victory over Jonas Masalin. A 120 Shanghai finish and an 11-darter featuring a 96 checkout helped 'The Bullet' establish a 4-0 lead before Masalin avoided the whitewash with a 100 finish for a 12-darter.

Clayton faced a tougher examination from home qualifier Laszlo Kadar. The Hungarian levelled at both 1-1 and 2-2, including an excellent 105 checkout, before Clayton began to take control. An 11-darter moved him 3-2 ahead and a scrappy sixth leg produced the first break of throw.

Kadar gave the Budapest crowd one final highlight by taking out 80 through two double 20s to stay alive at 5-3, but Clayton responded with an 81 checkout on the bull to complete a 6-3 victory. Ross Smith now awaits 'The Ferret' in the last 16.

Keane Barry completed the remaining victory of the session with a 6-2 win over Madars Razma. The Latvian had produced a spectacular 158 checkout via treble 19, treble 17 and bull to lead 2-1, but Barry immediately broke back and did not lose another leg. An 81 finish on the bull helped establish control before a 68 checkout booked a Sunday meeting with Dave Chisnall.

With all eight Saturday evening winners confirmed, the Hungarian Darts Trophy now moves into its decisive Sunday in Budapest, beginning with the last 16 before the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final determine the champion.
