Luke Humphries the new world number one after World Darts Championships

Whether Luke Humphries will become world champion we won't know until Wednesday night, but at least 'Cool Hand Luke' is already number one in the new world rankings after the tournament.

With Michael van Gerwen's loss in the quarterfinals against Scott Williams, Humphries needed to reach the final to take over first place from Michael Smith. Defending champion Smith already lost in the last 16 against Chris Dobey at the World Darts Championship. Should Humphries win the final against Luke Littler, the Englishman will have a lead of almost four hundred thousand pounds over both Van Gerwen and Smith.

Humphries is the thirteenth world number one in PDC history. Alan Warriner, Dennis Priestley, Rod Harrington, Phil Taylor, Peter Manley, John Part, Colin Lloyd, Raymond van Barneveld, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright and Michael Smith preceded him.
