Martin Lukeman has maintained his unbeaten status in Group C of the Grand Slam of Darts. 'Smash' also won his final pool duel in Wolverhampton by beating Leonard Gates 5-3.
Lukeman had won in his first two matches against Peter Wright (5-0) and Rob Cross (5-3). Still, the Englishman needed two more legs Monday night to finally qualify for the knockout stage.
That succeeded fairly quickly against Gates. With a 123 finish and a 17-darter, Lukeman quickly gained a 2-0 lead. Gates, however, came back to 2-2 and signed for 3-3 with an 11-darter moments later. The American had to work hard, because only with a 5-3 win could 'Soulger' still hope for a place in the last sixteen.
Those hopes were shattered by Lukeman, who produced a 12-darter to make it 4-3. Lukeman then closed out the match beautifully with an 83 finish.
Next, Wright and Cross were allowed to take the stage in Wolverhampton. 'Snakebite' still had a slim chance of going through, but would have to win 5-0 or 5-1 against 'Voltage'.
However, the encounter was prematurely decided by Cross, who took a 2-1 lead with a 14-darter to secure the second spot. Wright's resistance was also broken. Cross easily won the next three legs to beat his Scottish opponent 5-1.
