Dimitri van den Bergh claimed his first Players Championship title since 2021 in glory that even he was baffled about admitting that he wasn't in the form all day to win the title as he won 8-3 against Matt Campbell.
The 15,000 top prize means that he moves up three places to seventh in the PDC Order of Merit and in particular, he admitted that he wasn't in form during the last two games which puzzled him in terms of winning the title.
"I am relaxed, this is so crazy. I've never really been in the position all day. I've been fighting, I've been battling I never give up. I'm playing into the 90's averages constantly with good scoring, checkouts. Then all of a sudden my last two games and that's the crazy part, the semi-finals and final I play 87 average but I'm standing here as the winner. So what can I say, I'm buzzing. It's been a while and I didn't expect to win this way," said Van den Bergh.
"This was just a really weird final. I think these are one of these wins that you can say experience, time playing on the tour and you'll have a few wins like this. I've played a really good tournament before I got to the semi-finals but the semi-finals until now, it wasn't really fantastic. I want to do better. But I'm standing here and I'm definitely chuffed about winning it but I'm in disbelief. I'm not understanding how this happened."
But despite being puzzled, he certainly takes joy and happiness out of it including giving a message to his 'missus' and family.
"Today how can you not take joy out of this. Yesterday I played a good game and was struggling in the way I'm experiencing life. Life can really good and it can be really tough. But it's about trying to work your way in between, it's a path you're trying to follow. Whatever I'm doing is working. Hard work pays off."
But one aspect that he isn't interested in surrounds the World Cup of Darts. Kim Huybrechts returned this weekend and threw a 100 average weeks after getting a serious injury at a football match. But he reiterated that they are not friends and that he doesn't really care right now what the partnership looks like at the end of the month and has no clarity either way.
"I wasn't interested in anything of that. Everybody needs to know me and Kim are not the best of friends and that's period. I always love to play for my Belgian nationality but so far right here, right now I have no idea what's going on. The PDC hasn't confirmed anything yet towards my management or me. But what has been confirmed today is I've won my third Players Championship tournament."
