Michael Smith and Mickey Mansell don’t seem likely to become friends anytime soon. The pair were in the spotlight recently after Smith lost to Mansell at the European Tour qualifier for the Poland Darts Open, then hit out strongly at the Northern Irishman afterwards. This Friday afternoon, they faced off again at the Belgian Darts Open, and the tension was still palpable, with both refusing to shake hands before the match.
It all started at the qualifier for the Poland Darts Open, where Smith lost to Mansell in the deciding round. After that match, ‘Bully Boy’ made his feelings clear on social media, where he was openly critical of his opponent, especially about the pace of play.
"Imagine doing that to win a game. Tinkerbell won’t come along and move your darts for you. No need to stand looking at the board for 15 seconds. Horrible mentality. And a horrible player," Smith said at the time about his opponent Mansell.
This afternoon Smith and Mansell met again in Wieze at the Belgian Darts Open, and from the outset it was clear the fire hadn’t died down between them. After both players arrived on stage, they refused to shake hands before the start of the match, something that is usually customary.
There was no sporting revenge for Smith either, as the former world champion once again had to bow to Mansell. ‘Bully Boy’ posted the higher average and hit four 180s, but was wasteful on the doubles, which ultimately saw him lose 6-3. Mansell advances to the second round, where tomorrow he will take on none other than the Dutchman, Michael van Gerwen.
