Michael Smith has sealed a sixth career
European Tour title on Monday evening at the
German Darts Grand Prix in Munich with an 8-5 win over first-time finalist and fellow Premier League star,
Nathan Aspinall.
Smith, the current World Number One and World Champion was utterly deadly on his doubles at times as well as his 180 hitting eight in total with a 102 average and 61.5% on the outer ring.
Smith was miles behind the opening leg but six missed darts from Aspinall saw ‘Bully Boy’ break to open his account. He doubled his lead on double 20 at 2-0.
An 83 checkout on the bull saw Smith make it 3-0 and he was throwing to go half way to the win. A 180 left 34 for Smith but Aspinall hit a 74 checkout to hold his nerve at 3-1 down with a break back.
A 108 checkout saw Aspinall consolidate to go one down. Smith hit a fifth maximum and a 56 checkout to make it 4-2.
Smith hit a sixth maximum to leave double eight and Aspinall missed 80 on double 20 allowing Smith back for 5-2.
A clinical 112 kept Aspinall two down with a break to make it 5-3. It was another maximum for Smith and he hit a 130 checkout on the bull to make it 6-3.
Aspinall missed the bull for a 90 checkout but Smith couldn’t pin double 15 going miles away allowing Aspinall back again for another break at 6-4.
Aspinall missed 130 on double five to hold but returned for double two make it 6-5. Smith hit an eighth 180 but missed 85 on double 20 only to return anyway for double five to make it 7-5.
A score of 10 meant the end was nigh for Aspinall as Smith set up 24 for the win and sealed it.
