Michael Unterbuchner won the 21st event of the PDC Challenge Tour on Saturday afternoon by defeating Peter Burgoyne 5-3 in the final. With this, 'T-Rex' managed to capture his very first title at the PDC.
The German managed to eliminate an impressive list of names on his way to the final match. It started at the last 128, where he swept aside James Howard Hughes 5-0. He then managed to beat his compatriot Daniel Klose 5-2, before being too strong for Kevin Burness 5-0 in the last 32.
At the last 16 he faced Lakeside champion Shane McGuirk, and he too was defeated 5-2. In the quarterfinals, he was then 5-2 too strong for Sam Spivey, before winning the semifinal match 5-4 over Charlie Manby to claim his spot in the final.
In turn, Burgoyne managed to defeat successively Michael Barnard (5-1), Kevin Leadenham (5-1), Joe Croft (5-3), Tommy Morris (5-4), Scott Campbell (5-1) and Jamie Hughes (5-2) to reach the final two.
In the final Burgoyne took a 2-0 lead with a 16-darter and a 17-darter, but then saw Unterbuchner take three legs in a row in 15, 13 and 20 arrows. Burgoyne still managed to get to 3-3, but saw the next two legs go to the German, who decided the match via a fine 14-darter to claim his first PDC title.
The PDC Challenge Tour is designed for players who participated in the Q-School, but failed to secure a Tour Card there. This circuit offers them a second chance to put themselves in the spotlight.
The highest ranked players on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit can participate as alternates in Players Championship tournaments during the season when spots become available. At the end of the year, the top two ranked players earn a coveted PDC Tour Card for the next two seasons - as well as a starting ticket to the World Darts Championship in Alexandra Palace.
