Michael van Gerwen has advanced to the quarterfinals at the Dutch Darts Championship in Rosmalen. His opponent has been confirmed as well in Danny Noppert.
Van Gerwen registered a rock-solid match against Dobey. The 35-year-old was able to produce excellent statistics with an average of 103.54 and a finishing percentage of 54.5 percent (6/11).
In the first leg, "Mighty Mike" managed to break his English opponent immediately with a 15-darter, then made it 3-0 via a 13-darter and a 14-darter. Dobey then broke Van Gerwen with a 130 finish, but then missed three darts to hold throw. Van Gerwen made it 4-1 with a 16-darter, then finished it off with a 16-darter and an 11-darter.
Noppert had his hands full with compatriot Jermaine Wattimena, after the match had initially started well for 'The Freeze'. With two 14-darters and a 12-darter he took a 3-0 lead.
Wattimena then threw out 120 to cut the deficit to 1-3, before Noppert threw a 14-darter for a 4-1 lead. After he missed four chances on doubles in the seventh leg, Wattimena was able to come back to 4-3 with a 17-darter.
The lead remained with Noppert, who produced a 13-darter to make it 5-3. In the ninth leg, he missed a matchdart before Wattimena recorded a 72 finish for the 4-5 lead. Then 'The Machine Gun' forced a deciding leg with a 17-darter in the tenth leg. In the last leg, both players missed a matchdart, before Noppert took victory with a 17-darter.
Jeffrey de Graaf could not hold on against Ryan Searle. The Swedish Dutchman won earlier in the tournament against Madars Razma (6-3) and Stephen Bunting (6-3), but against Searle he could only take one leg.
De Graaf took a 1-0 lead, but was not out in five innings in the next two legs. In the fourth leg a chance for 2-2 was missed from 106, after which Searle made it 3-1 with a 98 check-out. With a 96 finish, 107 check-out and a 13-darter, Searle then ran out to a 6-1 win.
A meeting with Jonny Clayton awaits for 'Heavy Metal' in the quarter-finals. 'The Ferret' was responsible for the elimination of defending champion Dave Chisnall, who missed a lot of darts on the doubles. 'Chizzy' hit only three of his 18 darts on the dice, but nevertheless still threw an average of 100.47.
Clayton's finishing percentage was much better at 40 percent (6/15). The Welshman managed to break Chisnall in the fourth leg via double 10 after Chisnall had missed three chances at 2-2. A 13-darter made it 4-1. Chisnall then missed five more chances to close to 2-3. After Clayton went ahead 5-1, Chisnall came back to 5-3 with an 11-darter and a 13-darter. That rebound came too late, however, and with a 17-darter Clayton finished the job in the ninth leg.
