Michael van Gerwen has reached the last sixteen at the
German Darts Grand Prix at the expense of a compatriot. The 34-year-old Dutchman won 6-4 over Jeffrey de Zwaan in the second round.
Neither man played great to be honest. The necessary doubles were missed; Van Gerwen missed 12 chances on the outernring, compared to eight for De Zwaan. Van Gerwen, however, created a lot more opportunities.
In the first leg Van Gerwen missed six break chances, allowing De Zwaan to get on the scoreboard first via double 8. The next four legs went to Mighty Mike, who threw a 15-darter and two 11-darters.
Van Gerwen then came within one leg of victory via a 16-darter in the sixth leg. However, De Zwaan still came out dangerously by coming back to 5-4, mainly because Van Gerwen missed three match darts in the eighth leg. In the tenth leg Van Gerwen decided the game after all with a 14-darter.
Earlier in the evening,
Martin Schindler convincingly managed to qualify for the last sixteen of the Euro Tour tournament in Munich. The German won 6-1 over Damon Heta in front of his own crowd.
