Michael van Gerwen qualified for the quarterfinals of the
German Darts Championship with a big win over Danny Noppert. 'Mighty Mike' overcame his compatriot 6-2.
Van Gerwen took full advantage of a poor start by Noppert and broke him twice in the first three legs. With a 72 finish, the 35-year-old Dutchman then pushed the lead to 4-0.
It wasn't until the fifth leg that Noppert got on the scoreboard via a 12-darter. After Van Gerwen missed three doubles, 'The Freeze' even came back to 2-4 after a 108 check-out. Noppert was allowed to start the seventh leg, but did not get an arrow on the double in five visits. Van Gerwen took advantage again and ran out to 5-2 via a 15-darter. The victory was not in danger after that and with a 14-darter in the eighth leg 'Mighty Mike' finished the job. In the last eight Van Gerwen will play the winner of the match between Peter Wright and Gian van Veee.
Dave Chisnall wasted particularly little energy in his match against Joe Cullen. After winning 6-3 over Dom Taylor in his first match, he was too strong for Joe Cullen at the last sixteen, 6-0. 'The Rockstar' had a total off-day with an average of 79.50. Cullen threw only seven scores of 100 or higher. That yielded four more chances at the doubles, but they were all missed.
Chisnall gained a 2-0 lead with a 16-darter and a 110 finish, before Cullen missed one chance at the double in the third leg. A 13-darter then took 'Chizzy' to 3-0. In leg four, Cullen missed a full hand on the doubles before Chisnall delivered the next thump with a 130 check-out. A 13-darter and a 15-darter then made it 6-0.
Martin Schindler made the German audience in Hildesheim cheer by advancing to the quarter-finals at the expense of Chris Dobey. 'Hollywood' impressed on Saturday with an average of 110, but now came to just 95 average and a finishing percentage of 33 percent. Dobey left it mostly in the early stages. The Englishman did not start the match well, and saw the first three legs go to Schindler. With a 15-darter and a 12-darter, Dobey came back to 3-2, but did not manage to completely close the gap.
That chance did come in the eighth leg. Dobey missed one chance at double 16, after which Schindler hit a 14-darter for 5-3. Dobey rallied one more time and made it 5-4 before Schindler decided the match with a 14-darter.
