Michael van Gerwen qualified for the quarterfinals of the German Darts Grand Prix in spectacular fashion on Monday afternoon. The Dutchman threw a nine darter and outclassed Ryan Searle 6-1 thanks to an average of almost 105.
Master of ceremonies Philip Brzezinski asked Van Gerwen on stage afterwards if this was the Dutchman's perfect match, although "Mighty Mike" thought that was exaggerated. The perfect game is a big word. But I think I did enough and upped my levels throughout the match when I needed to."
“To throw a nine-darter in front of this amazing crowd is special," Van Gerwen reflected on his stunning performance. For the world number three, it marked his 30th official nine darter in his career. “I’m in a tough position right now because I am not playing as well as I can. So to hit a nine-darter it means the world to me.”
Still, Van Gerwen remains level-headed. “But I am only in the quarter-final now, so I need to make sure I keep myself sharp for Ryan Joyce in the next game. I need to play well tonight and make sure I sweep him off the dart board.
To get back to a good performance on Monday night, Van Gerwen stressed that rest and preparation are crucial now. "Now I will rest and be ready to perform again because that is the only thing I can do."
