Michael van Gerwen has reached the quarterfinals of the
Baltic Sea Darts Open in Kiel. After a good start "Mighty Mike" had to pull out all the stops to deal with Andrew Gilding.
Van Gerwen won the first three legs of the match. After the 35-year-old missed eight chances in the fifth leg for a 4-1 lead, Gilding returned to 3-2 via double 8. A 14-darter from 'Goldfinger' then levelled the score after six legs.
A 13-darter and a 17-darter then allowed Van Gerwen to take a 5-3 lead. Gilding forced a deciding leg via a 78 check-out and a 17-darter. In the last leg, Van Gerwen showed his class by throwing a 132 finish and a 12-darter. He went a showman route with bull-bull and double 16 to conclude the tie. A flourish to finish.
In the last eight,
Luke Humphries will be the Dutchman's next opponent. Humphries was comfortably ahead 5-1 after six legs against Ross Smith, but 'Smudger' fought back to 5-4. Humphries then prevented a deciding leg with a 14-darter.
