Michael van Gerwen has also been forced to cancel for the International Darts Open, the Euro Tour tournament taking place this weekend in the German town of Riesa.
Van Gerwen was felled by a shoulder injury, forcing him to cancel as early as Thursday for the ninth round of Premier League Darts play in Riesa. Immediately it also became clear that 'Mighty Mike' would not be fit enough to be in action this weekend at the International Darts Open.
Another Dutchman has been called up as Van Gerwen's replacement. Richard Veenstra was the highest ranked player on the reserve list and will travel to Riesa. Veenstra also takes over his compatriot's spot in the tournament schedule and can therefore enter the Euro Tour tournament from the second round. On Saturday, 'Flyers' will play the winner of the duel between Andrew Gilding and William O'Connor in the last 32.
If Michael van Gerwen withdraws from this weekend's European Tour too, Richard Veenstra will replace him in round two.
