Michael van Gerwen will face Callan Rydz on New Years Day in the Quarter-Finals of the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship after quelling the charge of Jeffrey de Graaf 4-2 in sets.
De Graaf was easily swept aside in the opening two sets but found a sudden way back into the match sealing two sets on the spin only for MVG again to give him no chance to assert any authority on the clash.
Van Gerwen who has long seen a fourth World title elude him and has been an underperformer at the Ally Pally in recent years as well as overall on tour in 2024 could yet scoop the biggest prize come January 3.

Van Gerwen gave De Graaf no chance early on like alluded to and that was confounded by a 3-1 opening salvo with an average of 103.8 and a 118 checkout as he took the lead.
He sent De Graaf the message of come and match this as he coasted to the second set without reply from there to double his lead averaging 103 again with his doubling sat at 66%.
Match it De Graaf would as he clinched the third and fourth set. His finishing in particular was utterly sublime. He sat at 7/11 after the two sets in a row with the double 18 in particular on the end of his hand like a piece of string.
But he started to fade and after handing MVG a break following missed darts, he barely got another opportunity to register a leg. Great champions often find a way through adversity and Van Gerwen did so. He sealed set five with a 14-darter on double eight to go one away and it was six legs on the spin as he sealed the win.
He started the next set with a 126 checkout and broke with a 58 checkout to go one away before he went down to double three with De Graaf still way off.
