Nathan Aspinall managed to reach the last sixteen at the
International Darts Open in impressive fashion on Saturday. He defeated Jonny Clayton 6-2 by posting an average of no less than 113.14.
After losing the first leg, Aspinall took a 2-1 lead with an 11-darter and a 124 finish. Via a 14-darter and a 12-darter, 'The Asp' ran out to 4-2, before making it 5-2 via a 13-darter. Aspinall then closed out the match with another 13-darter.
The average of 113.14 was good for a fifteenth spot on the list of highest averages in
European Tour history. It is also Aspinall's highest ranking on the list.
The list has been led for six years by
Dave Chisnall, who managed to produce an average of 118.66 at the 2018 German Darts Championship. In doing so, he took over the record from
Michael van Gerwen. The Dutchman had thrown an average of 117.94 at the 2015 German Darts Championship.
By the way, Van Gerwen's name often appears in the top-20 highest averages, according to an overview by statistics platform TheRedBit. Indeed, Van Gerwen has managed to throw above 113 average seven times on the Euro Tour.
