New World Championship sponsor gives Van Gerwen new nickname: ''Mighty Mike is too boring a nickname''

With a slick video, it was announced earlier this week that Paddy Power has become the new main sponsor of the World Darts Championship. They are taking over this role from Cazoo.

In typically playful fashion, Paddy Power immediately announced a number of changes. For example, they felt that Michael van Gerwen should go by the name 'The Wizard' from now on. They felt 'Mighty Mike' was too boring a nickname.

That did not go down well with Van Gerwen, however, who pointed out to the marketers that a family member had nicknamed him "Mighty Mike" and that another darter (Simon Whitlock) was already called "The Wizard.

Of course, it was all part of an advertising stunt and Van Gerwen is simply keeping his nickname 'Mighty Mike.'
