Nine-dart Luke Woodhouse sails through to round 2 at Players Championship 17 as Michael Smith and Jonny Clayton among notable casualties

The first round of Players Championship 17 has reached a conclusion and whilst most big names have made it through, there have been a couple of casualties.

Luke Woodhouse impressed in a 6-0 win over Ritchie Burnett. The Englishman faced the 1995 world champion in the first round of Players Championship 17. By the time Woodhouse threw his nine darter, he had already built up a 4-0 lead in the first few legs. Woodhouse then started the fifth leg with a 177 before he threw a 180 after that. With a 144 finish, Woodhouse then completed the nine-darter. He then threw a 14-darter to win 6-0 over Burnett. It is his fourth nine-darter on the PDC circuit for Woodhouse. Nice detail is that his previous nine-darter was also against Burnett (in 2023). Woodhouse did not yet manage to throw a nine-darter at a television tournament.  

Among those not quite so fortunate however, the likes of Michael Smith, Jonny Clayton, Raymond van Barneveld, Peter Wright and James Wade all departed in the first round.

A total of 125,000 pounds in prize money is distributed at each Players Championship tournament. The winner of the event will receive a check for 15,000 pounds.
