Danny Noppert has handed Michael van Gerwen another early exit as his wait for his first ranking title of the season and also his 33rd European Tour title live on with the Green Machine not winning one since 2019.
The International Darts Open is also one of the only tournaments not on his current resume and it won’t be this weekend after a 6-4 defeat to ‘The Freeze’ who broke his hoodoo at the World Grand prix and now has back-to-back wins over his compatriot.
It was a 94.7 average for Noppert who missed the chance to go 3-2 up on Van Gerwen with an 86 checkout falling flat of the mark before MVG took out 100 but despite going 4-3 down, this break did finally come with Van Gerwen missing multiple darts from 62 and Noppert took advantage on double 20.
He had the throw from there and pinned double 12 to claim it 6-4 with Van Gerwen unable to claim a break back.
It will be Gerwyn Price next up who has kept hold of his World Number One spot at least for now after he saw off Damon Heta with ease 6-2.
It was a comprehensive display from 'The Iceman' with a 102 average, highest checkout in 116 and 37.5% on doubles.
Price missed three darts to break but Heta couldn’t reply with a 120 checkout and ‘The Iceman’ hit double one to go 1-0 up and he backed that up on double 20.
Heta began his throw with a 180 but after a 92 checkout couldn’t get hit, Price pinned an 87 checkout to go 3-0 up with a 108 average.
Again, Heta couldn’t produce on a 124 and Price smashed in a 116 checkout to go 4-0 up and two away from the win.
He missed 130 on the bull to break but Heta missed double 12 for a 141 but Price gave Heta a reprieve missing double 12 to break and Heta returned for double six to hold at 4-1 down.
A 60 checkout saw Price go one away at 5-1. Heta pinned 74 to hold and get another leg back. A 180 and double 10 saw Price move through.
