This year's
World Matchplay is full of surprises. For example, the top five on the seedings list were all eliminated early on.
The top-5 seedings (Michael Smith, Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price and Rob Cross) all lost before the quarterfinals. Thus, with
Luke Humphries (6th seed) and
Jonny Clayton (7th seed), there were only two top-8 players in the quarterfinals of the World Matchplay.
Only three times before have so few players from the top eight managed to qualify for the quarterfinals of the World Matchplay. The first time was in 1995, when second-seeded Phil Taylor and fourth-seeded Dennis Priestley managed to reach the quarterfinals. In 2001, only Taylor and John Part succeeded. Finally, in 2020, Michael Smith and Gary Anderson were the only players from the top eight to reach the quarterfinals.
