Berry van Peer has qualified for the second round at the World Darts Championship with an excellent performance. 'Bionic' defeated Luke Woodhouse 3-2 in sets to force a duel with Josh Rock.
With Woodhouse, Van Peer faced the toughest possible draw on paper. The Englishman is ranked 33rd in the world and was one place short of qualifying directly for the second round of the World Darts Championship. However, 'The Shed' was beaten on all fronts by the Dutchman. Van Peer recorded an average of 94 and an excellent finishing percentage of 48 percent.
Van Peer missed an opportunity in the first set to win the set 3-1, but with a 13-darter in the fifth leg 'Bionic' deservedly won the first set. The second set went just 3-2 to his English opponent, who threw a 15-darter in the fifth leg of the set.
However, the initiative remained with Van Peer, who opened the third set with a 78 finish. He then also threw out 88 to make it 2-1 and then broke Woodhouse with a 60 checkout to take the set 3-1.
The Dutchman fell behind 0-2 in the fourth set, but fought his way back to 2-2 with a 12-darter and a 92 finish. In Woodhouse's leg, 'Bionic' was then able to finish the job, but his first two match darts were missed.
Those seemed like costly misses at first, as Woodhouse forced a final set with a 60 finish. Van Peer, however, responded superbly by winning the first leg of the final set via double 16. A 14-darter in Woodhouse's leg then put Van Peer within one leg of victory. That needed leg was obtained a leg later via double 10, giving Van Peer his debut win.
