Gerwyn Price managed to win a Players Championship tournament last week for the first time since late 2023. This did not earn him much in the world rankings, but for his position on the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit, this achievement was a lot more important.
In winning the title in Wigan, Price earned 15,000 pounds. This moved him up to eighteenth place on the Pro Tour Order of Merit, which is actually still very disappointing for a player of his caliber. The way up, however, has been set for Price, who is keen to move up this ranking.
Not for qualification for the big tournaments, because Price is already sure of that because of his position on the regular PDC Order of Merit, but a higher position on the Pro Tour ranking increases the chance of getting far in the floor tournaments. This is because the Pro Tour Order of Merit is used to determine the seeding list for the Players Championship tournaments and with his current position Price can meet world class players such as Luke Humphries and Luke Littler at an earlier stage.
Like Price, Rob Cross also managed to win a Players Championship tournament. The former world champion is also not very high on the Pro Tour ranking and now holds the fourteenth spot. However he still leaves big names such as Gary Anderson (17th), Peter Wright (21st) and Michael Smith (25th) behind him.
The first spot on the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit has been held by Dave Chisnall for some time. He earned £168,000 in the past 12 months on the Pro Tour tournaments, which include the European Tours and Players Championship tournaments. His closest pursuers are Humphries (£155,500), Littler (£151,500), and Stephen Bunting (£151,000).
