The six final contenders for the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award have been confirmed by the British broadcasters and as expected, darts' own Luke Littler is amongst the potential winners.
For those who don't know, The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award (SPOTY) is an annual accolade celebrating the UK’s finest sporting achievements in a calendar year. No darts player has ever taken the victory at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, although Phil Taylor was nominated on a couple of occasions, even finishing 2nd in 2010.
“It would be a big thing for myself," admits Littler in quotes collected by Oche180 about the potential of winning SPOTY as he currently sits second in the list of bookies favourites. "But, I've not really looked at who is in first. Is it a runner, Keely Hodgkinson? I've seen some things, but yeah, people don't really class us as athletes do they. So if I can come second, that'll do."
Alongside Littler and the aforementioned 800m Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson on the final shortlist are Real Madrid and England star Jude Bellingham, England cricket icon Joe Root, Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee and legendary Para-Cyclist Sarah Storey. Notably, Littler is the only name also on the final shortlist for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award.
For darts fans looking to back their sporting hero, voting open on the day of the show, where the winner will eventually be announced live on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show on Tuesday, 17th of December. Viewers in the UK will be able to watch the action and see if Littler claims a famous BBC Sports Personality of the Year and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year double on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 19:00 GMT.

- Is this the start of an attempt to say that he (Littler) is the best ever as he has won most money. Perhaps adjust all prize money earned by allowing for inflation. If Littler gets close too (does not even have to overtake) both MVG’s and Taylor’s Major titles total then he is in the conversation. Indicates to me that the prize money is skewed to much towards the top players, meritocracy must rule but a fair distribution of the money is needed otherwise its only ever about a select few.Mysstree09-01-2025

- It is shocking and unbelievable that 2 Hotty who was always such a decent player, 2 time World Champion and won the Grand Slam when it meant something. He really should have joined the PDC earlier. He has just disappeared off the radar. Such a shame when one of your favourite players just dissappears. I guess he is concentrating on the carpentry. It is quite pathetic and desperate the way Bunting and Arsepinall pander to the crowd to dance to their walk on music, that has worked though. I would like to see more players involved on a weekly basis similar to the Modus Super Series. A knockout tournament with 16 winners from each week.
