Gerwyn Price left the stage disillusioned, after losing in the quarter-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship against Michael Smith.
The Welshman, who threw a nine-darter earlier in the match and missed two match darts in the eighth set, lost 5-4 to his English opponent. During the match, Price also caused a remarkable moment by by ensuring that a visitor was sent out of Alexandra Palace.
Price had the crowd against him again. The fans were booing and whistling when The Iceman was throwing. ''Cheats'', the world number one wrote on Instagram to vent his frustrations.
Price later came up with a more detailed response. ''Absolutely gutted to go out in the last 8 of the World Championships. Having worked so hard in the last few months, so proud of myself for just being me and playing the best I can, even with all the hurdles in front of me. I will get stronger, I will come back better, I will practice harder, I will sacrifice more (and) I will succeed. I will do everything it takes to be the best. I will be back. Class is permanent'', he added.
Abuse of players needs to stop but I doubt the argument for Price being booed was that he wasn't English. He was playing a German who didn't receive any stick because he got up and played his darts. James Richardson, Ted Evetts, Ricky Evans all got booed when playing women and they are English. Two players who got some of the worse abuse were Peter Manley and Mervyn King - both English. And no, I'm not English, I'm from the Isle of Man and would be solidly behind any Manx player who made it to the worlds but would find it necessary to boo or jeer their opponent.
To jabber on again - some players do deserve to be booed at times for acting the prat (Paul Nicholson comes to mind), showing a poor attitude (Peter Manley - 2006 world final) and unsporting conduct (Mervyn King - BDO Worlds 2004/Premier League throwing dart over Taylor). I will emphasise though there is a difference in booing a player and hurling abuse. Booing is part of sports (Muhammed Ali loved to be the man they loved to hate) and officials make unpopular calls. But verbally abusing players and families? Nah, totally not on. The PDC needs to step in, the players need to speak out more and pressurise the PDC to do more. The referees need to intervene when abuse starts and those caught need to be expelled and banned from the arena and prevented from attending events in the future.
If Gerwin Price didn't rile the crowd up so much they would have nothing to banter him about, Jack Wilson used to do the same, then spat the dummy out when he didn't like it, so goose and the gander comes to mind.
Same goes for Paul Nicholson and Ted Hankey. There is one thing booing a player and hurling abuse though.
Imagine if it was 15 years ago, at the Circus Tavern people shoulder to shoulder…. Almost leaning on the stage because it was so cramped with fans, even players and commentators were amongst the throng of people chanting “There’s only one Philip Taylor!! There’s only oneeeee Philip Taylor!!! Walking along, singing a song walking in a Taylor wander land” or whoever it was, I went for the last 6 years it was there, some early rounds for an all dayer, quarters, semi’s, me and my buddy preferred to watch the final at home with our home brew and cheese and biscuits and what not. In all those times there I met players who were cool and happy to chat, I met Mardel and I was wearing a Bristow shirt, he spotted it as we were going to take a picture, and he said not with that fu#@ing shirt on and burst out laughing and pulled me in for a great photo. The fans rubbed shoulders, chatted, talked about the games coming up, who’s going to smash who, who would have a close match, chatter while we waited for our, not bad, but maybe “iffy” pints, and in all promised honesty I never ever saw a fight break out (I have seen it happen when the premiere league visited Stevenage, but that was more the bouncers and security” and it was reported in the paper as such) but Never ever at the WC @ the tavern. It was a totally different environment, proper fans were there, because that’s alls there was really room for, you’d find each table had the seats booked and used by darts teams who had come out and knew who all the players were, the people who actually follow the game, genuine straight up fans who also played and understood and enjoyed the fun and drama of buckets loads of 180s and big finishes, but now, after experiencing the Ally Pally four times or more, I’ve found/noticed that there’s a hell of a lot of people that aren’t interested in the darts one bit, they are there because it’s become a novelty, and bunches of tickets are bought up By companies as gift’s to send some of there super special employees to “t’darts” where they can get lagered up on panther piss fosters or some other crappy watered down dregs, some of them hit the toilets, and have a big old sniff. I’ve seen it, it’s a shame, the singing and chanting for random people that aren’t even playing, it’s become more like a football match that’s on edge a bit with slightly provocative/aggressive chanting and what not. It can become groups chanting at each other, and that’s usually stirred up by the plastic/pretend fans. That are there for the beer, and oh, dress as a giant cock or giraffe. Just my ramblings. I dunno. Lol
Grow a pair mate. Bristow had it far worse and never complained.
I've seen the anti English taunts particularly in Scotland so let's not get in to English bias fans. In this case it's not nationalistic, darts fans love great players and Price is great player. His problem is he's so animated, so arrogant he has set himself up for the reaction he gets.
Could be the Covid travel limitations, which makes the crowd more local instead of international, but the English chants, booing non-english players on the World Championship is worse than ever and that is a shame. Normally, it was only that bad in Scotland and overseas! Maybe go to Ireland. Hardly any Irish players worth chanting for.
I hate nationalism when it comes to sports, but this is all to common. It is almost not done if you cheer for someone with another nationality (F1, Football, Darts(German and Dutch dart fans are alike). Since the order of Merit holds more nationalities than ever in the top 10 and top 32, maybe approach the tournaments more international as well instead of playing every major tournament in England (apart from a couple PL nights and European Championship). Darts is popular in Asia as well lol.
This abuse of non English players and in particular Gerwin Price, needs to stop. Its spoiling the game as a spectacle and is very disrespectful to both players and their families. Price's daughters were present last night. How do you think they felt watching and hearing their Dad being verbally abused?. This abuse is certainly spoiling it for me to the point where I'm considering not watching anymore. Like him or loathe him, Price deserves respect for what he has achieved in darts and more so considering he's achieved it while being verbally abused at virtually every tv tournament. It's gone way beyond humorous banter and become very personal and that is unacceptable. The match officials need to clamp down hard on this issue because the crowd are being allowed to get away with doing whatever they want to players except throw things at them. Remember, it was only a few years ago that someone poured beer over Phil Taylor during his walk on and I'm not even certain that individual was thrown out. Get this sorted PDC before the abuse becomes physical.
It was van Gerwen who got doused and the idiot responsible was thrown out.
He's simply a bad loser. In that he wasn't on a double, he was on scoring. But the booing against him needs to be stopped.
Price must be angry about the treatment that he got from some nobodies among the crowd and the lack of protection that he and all the non English players have been afforded by the PDC officials. This started to get out of hand when they allowed the crowd to boo male players when they played against females. The PDC wants Sherrock and Ashton to win the odd match and then the media can hype them up as though they won the whole event and the crowd putting off their opponent on their doubling helps. Unfortunately the lowest common denominator among the crowd will sink lower and lower if they are allowed to unchecked and this along with covid testing healthy players has ruined this years world darts championship. Whoever lifts the title this year will know in their heart that it has been tarnished and massively devalued . VVDV, MVG and DC most likely got their covid infections from the crowd and even though all of them are totally well, the rules forced them to withdraw. This is a great shame for them and darts as they have done everything that they possibly could to avoid infection, living in bubbles in their private lives and making many sacrifices only to be punished by poor organisation and contradictary rules. Get it sorted.
I would agree, sensible comment. But also the over animated reaction of players doesn't help. It's becomes like pantomime, wrestling and others, the baddy gets booed but only because he/she sets themselves up for it.
