Price survived four match-darts against Luke Woodhouse earlier on the day, before also beating Jamie Hughes, Steve Beaton and Stephen Bunting to reach the final in Wigan. Van Gerwen moved into the Players Championship final after defeating the likes of Gary Anderson, Cristo Reyes, James Wade and Krzysztof Ratajski. The world number one also hit a nine-darter in his fourth round match against Reyes.
The Dutchman started with a 126 checkout in the final, before Price reeled off four legs on the spin to lead 4-1. With a 12-darter in the 11th leg he extended his lead to 7-4. Mighty Mike refused to give up and leveled the match after two brilliant 11-dart legs and a 15-darter.
Van Gerwen had the throw in the leg-decider, but only found three trebles in his first three turns, while The Iceman left 94 after nine darts. The world number one raised the pressure on his Welsh opponent with a 174-score to leave double 18, but Price claimed the victory with a brilliant 94 finish on the bullseye.
