Gerwyn Price will continue his stint as World Number One at least for the time being after defeating
Peter Wright 8-4 in the final of the
International Darts Open in Riesa.
It is a third triumph in the tournament for Price with a 106.95 average, three 180’s, two ton plus checkouts and 88.9% on the doubles against his rival.
He also wins a third
European Tour title in a row after collecting the only two held in 2021 and it is a sixth overall with all eyes set to be on the UK Open next week for Wright’s potential next chance to top the Order of Merit.
Wright produced a timely 180 in a quality opening leg and he got the first shot but missed bull for an 81. Price took aim at the same target and hit double six to break and go 1-0 up.
Again Wright was on 81 after nine again and he hit the bull this time to make it 1-1 and break back. He handed Price a shot at 150 but he couldn’t take it and Wright hit double eight to lead 2-1.
An 86 checkout for an 11-darter saw Price square it up at 2-2 and he hit a 108 checkout from there saw him lead at 3-2. A spurned five darts at double saw Price continue his dominance at 4-2 up.
The reigning World Champion wasn’t done yet pegging him back at 4-3 and despite keeping him at arm's length, Wright made it 5-4 to continue that theme.
A 139 setup leaving 40 saw Price go two away at 6-4 with a 103 average to Wright’s 107. Price hit another 180 to half his score but Wright was down to 121 with Price not on a finish.
But Wright spurned darts to hold and Price broke throw to go 7-4 up and one away from a title. He sealed it in style from there with a 130 checkout.
